Linguistic Trends of Basque Youth. Minorization and Visibilization in the Spanish and European Context
Abstract
Basque society is concerned about the use and linguistic practice of Basque. The Plans for the normalization of Basque have an impact on the different social and administrative sectors. At an educational level, the linguistic immersion model is the most effective when it comes to ensuring communicative competence in the Basque language. The latest sociological survey by the Basque Government shows that Basque youth are able to express themselves in Basque but opt for a bilingual linguistic practice with a predominance of Spanish. Sociolinguistic scientific research must delve into the study of the awareness and use of language in the university environment. For its part, the monolingual linguistic imaginary of Spanish society in general needs updating based on its different educational and social plans that take into account European regulations on multilingualism and the principles reflected in the European Charter for Regional and Minority Languages.
