Globalization – European Union – Globalization
Abstract
This article will not discuss the reality of globalization, or of the European Union or their relationship, scope, complexity and dynamism, almost unfathomable and outside the scope of this paper, but will only provide an introduction to their study to help further the debate. In the 21st century, this debate has resulted in numerous and powerful efforts of definition, conceptualization and theorizing; here some relevant points of reference and arguments are provided as anchors and rope for a possible route through these dimensions. The key lies in Castells’s paradox: the European integration is both a reaction to globalization and its most advanced expression. Three very different studies are presented. Then, the paper explores, from the point of view of social constructivism, the «actorness» of the EU, consisting of the opportunity, presence and capacity, as well as collective identity. Finally, it ends with the presentation of several global European strategies.
