The Protection of the Environment in situations of Armed Conflict: the Implications for the European Union of the War in Ukraine
Abstract
Although the environmental policy of the European Union was enshrined in the Treaties decades ago, it was not until recent years that the European Union has taken on this matter with seriousness and achievements, becoming a true bulwark of environmental protection, including climate change. The environment is inextricably associated with the issue of national and international security. This has been exemplified by the war between Russia and Ukraine of 2021. It has also posed a series of threats and opportunities to the European security on environment and energy and has demonstrated its impact on the Union’s external action. This work analyzes these threats and the responses offered to reflect on the true effect of the conflict in the European Union.
