Persona, dignidad y democracia en la Unión Europea
Abstract
The adventure of a shared future, the European Union’s main objective, can only be achieved beyond the legal-political dimension. Indeed, the integration project is based on essential values that are part and parcel of its heritage. The prologue to the EU Fundamental Rights Charter also proclaims that «the Union places the person and his or her rights at the centre of the integration process». Nevertheless, part of the European civil society also shows a critical attitude toward the project. Comprehending the values in all their depth and applying them with a greater conviction could give the project the impulse needed. The credibility of the EU, not only to the world but also to its citizens, depends on the respect and promotion of the person and his or her dignity, which are the basis of the so called «democratic challenge» of the EU.
